A Tale of Two Drafts in 2013

TORONTO – While coffee row debates, and media lane erupts with impassioned speechifications about the Toronto Argonauts 2013 draft selections, one glaring elephant in the room remains un-talked about.

Maxmillien Rosenberg, the Toronto Argonauts’ Digital Media Coordinator, remains undrafted – by every team in the league.

“We targeted the best players for this organization and four out of five of them happened to be local,” said Argos’ GM Jim Barker.  He was NOT talking about Mr. Rosenberg.  Instead, he was referring to Hec Crighton award nominee Matt Sewell out of Milton, Jermaine Gabriel out of Scarborough, Natey Adjei of Mississauga and Michael Di Domenico of Burlington.

“He was a guy that we did a lot of extensive work on,” said Saskatchewan Roughriders’ General Manager Brendan Taman on Monday afternoon after the draft was over. “The interesting part about him is he is a dual position guy as he can play centre and guard.”  Taman was referring to 4th overall pick, Corey Watman from Queensville, Ontario and NOT Maxmillien Rosenberg of the Toronto Rosenbergs.

Rosenberg is a dual position guy as well.  He can cut AND paste in his everyday work, and he does these things interchangeably, sometimes pasting THEN cutting.

“We know he can do both.  What’s he going to be the best at?  We’ll figure that out,” said Alouettes General Manager, Jim Popp.  Again, he was NOT referring to Maxmillien Rosenberg, but instead to some guy named Mike Edem who hales from Brampton and led the CIS Canada West conference with 55 tackles while also adding four sacks and an interception in 2012 on his way to being named the Canada West defensive player of the year – if one’s into that sort of thing.

Rosenberg gave me the finger once.  He is known for his very excellent facial hair and has nice handwriting skills too.  He can be mean and nasty – all 138lbs of him.  Who wouldn’t want a character guy like that in their locker room?

Instead, the Argonauts are left with what has shaped up to be the badest, assiest Communications department in the CFL – not to mention the motley crew of misfits, castoffs, and wordsmithian social media darlings ever assembled in one place to write, tweet, and talk Argonaut Football – and they’re called ‘Admirals’.

Perhaps it’s best this way.  Let the CFL have the best football players in Canada (and Ontario for that matter).  There was another draft held in 2013 that no one talked about.  The Argos Admirals, added some ‘tude to their ranks this past month.  An armada of double blue contributors, combined with the very significant chip on Rosenberg’s shoulder in the Argos’ Communications department, will make for some great tea conversations come gridiron time.
